International Physical Theatre Workshop Held in Berlin, 7–11 April

From 7 to 11 April, NIPAI - New International Performing Arts Institute - held the international physical theatre workshop “The Art of Action on Stage” in Berlin.

The workshop brought together participants from Australia, Austria, China, Germany, Greece, Latvia, the Netherlands, Serbia, Switzerland, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, creating a truly international and multidisciplinary working environment.

During the five-day intensive, participants explored physical theatre as a practical stage language. The program focused on the difference between mechanical and physical action, and on how directors, actors, dancers, choreographers, movement practitioners, and theatre teachers can use movement, body angles, placement, rhythm, and partner work to build clear and repeatable stage composition.

The training included practical work with theatre biomechanics by Vsevolod Meyerhold, psychological gesture by Michael Chekhov, physical action by Konstantin Stanislavski, improvisation-based training, movement dramaturgy, and approaches to scene composition.

The workshop reflected NIPAI’s long-standing commitment to multicultural and multidisciplinary exchange in the performing arts. Participants worked in an intensive studio format, combining physical training, creative experimentation, ensemble practice, and professional reflection on the actor’s and director’s tools for contemporary stage work.
